Food production has a major impact on biodiversity, meaning species and ecosystem variation in nature.
Axfood’s biodiversity strategy
– The loss of biodiversity is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and food production is responsible for the absolute largest negative impact. That is why we have a responsibility to help make a change, says Helena Allard, sustainability innovator at Axfood.
Goal and activities for biodiversity
Axfood has had sustainability goals related to biodiversity for some time. For several years, numerous initiatives and activities have been carried out to improve the conditions for a rich variety of plant and animal life, for example through goals for organic sales, phasing out the use of palm oil in biofuel and the sale of eggs from free-range chickens raised on soy-free feed.
Axfood’s strategy for biodiversity includes several areas such as purchasing and sale of goods, food waste, establishing new stores and having a positive social impact.
– The strategy summarises our view on biodiversity, describes what Axfood is doing today and provides guidelines for future work. This is an excellent starting point for our continued work to further advance our position, says Helena Allard.
AxTalks on biodiversity
As a part of Axfood’s internal sustainability week (the week of 20 March 2023), the AxTalks webinar addressed biodiversity related to Axfood’s operations. The webinar can be viewed (in Swedish) here.
