At Dagab, we take pride in our commitment to sustainability and the environment. One of our most ambitious initiatives is to have completely fossil-free transports between our warehouses and stores by the end of 2025. At Dagab, we take pride in our commitment to sustainability and the environment. One of our most ambitious initiatives is to have completely fossil-free transports between our warehouses and stores by the end of 2025. By investing in new technology and innovative solutions, we are actively working to reduce our climate impact and contribute to a greener future.
In December 2024, 97 percent of our own transports were fossil-free, and to achieve our goal of completely fossil-free transports between our warehouses and all Axfood Group stores by the end of 2025, we have implemented several strategies:
Diversification of the vehicle fleet: We have long invested in various fuels for our vehicles to determine which type of vehicle is best suited for the different tasks within our operations.
Renewable fuels: Utilize the fossil-free fuels available on the market, such as biogas and HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil). These fuels significantly reduce our carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
Electrification of the vehicle fleet: We have gradually renewed our vehicle fleet and actively chosen electric alternatives. We have collaborated with vehicle manufacturers to analyze which routes are best suited for electric vehicles and then started adapting the electric infrastructure at our warehouse units. Whenever possible, we have also sought financial support from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency or the Swedish Energy Agency. This has not only reduced our greenhouse gas emissions but also contributed to a quieter and cleaner working environment.
Efficient logistics: By optimizing our routes and using advanced logistics systems, we can reduce the number of kilometres driven and thus also our emissions. We continuously work to improve our planning and coordination to maximize efficiency.
Training and awareness: Our drivers are regularly trained in eco-driving through their professional competence training, which means they learn to drive in a way that minimizes fuel consumption and emissions. When we introduce new electric vehicles, we also train the drivers to handle an electric truck in the best possible way. We also encourage a culture of sustainability throughout the company.
Concrete tips for other companies
For companies that want to follow in our footsteps and develop a fossil-free vehicle fleet, we have some concrete tips:
Start with an inventory: Map your current vehicle fleet and identify which vehicles can be replaced with electric alternatives or can be powered by renewable fuels. All modern trucks can run on HVO, but running on biogas requires an investment in a new truck.
Set clear goals: Define concrete and measurable goals to reduce your emissions. This gives you a clear direction and motivation to continue the work.
Invest in training: Train your drivers in eco-driving and sustainability. This can have a significant impact on fuel consumption and emissions.
Collaborate with suppliers: Choose suppliers who share your vision of sustainability and can offer environmentally friendly alternatives. A key part of success is collaborating between multiple stakeholders.
Evaluate and adjust: Regularly follow up on your progress and be prepared to adjust your strategies as needed. Sustainability work is an ongoing process that requires continuous improvement.
