To optimise logistics operations, a decision has been made that the logistics centre in Bålsta primarily will handle volumes for the food retail sector. This decision entails that going forward, volumes to external customers in the convenience trade will be concentrated to Dagab’s existing warehouse in Örebro.

In recent years, Axfood has developed an even more sustainable, efficient and competitive product supply by establishing a nationwide logistics platform of the highest standard. This work was initiated in 2019 with the construction of a new highly automated logistics centre in Bålsta that will serve all Axfood’s store concepts with goods. The work on constructing and completing the logistics centre has been ongoing during five intense years, and Bålsta is now the main supplying warehouse for primarily all Group-owned and retailer-owned stores in Willys, Hemköp, Tempo and Snabbgross in the Mälardalen region and northern Sweden.

Due to Axfood’s strong growth in recent years, and to optimise the logistics operations, a decision has now been made that the logistics centre in Bålsta primarily will handle volumes for the food retail sector. Volumes for external customers in the convenience trade will be concentrated to Dagab’s existing warehouse in Örebro. This entails that operations in Örebro will remain, and eventually be expanded in pace with the transfer and concentration of volumes that today is being handled through Dagab’s warehouses in Skellefteå and Sätra to Örebro during the first half of 2026, the latest. The decision does not impact expected annual efficiency improvements from the investment in the Bålsta logistics centre.

– Concentrating convenience trade volumes to our Örebro warehouse means that we can create the necessary conditions to deliver better quality, higher efficiency, and also at the same time secure capacity for further growth in both food retail and the convenience trade, says Hans Bax, Managing Director of Dagab, Axfood’s purchasing and logistics company.

In addition, a number of initiatives is ongoing to optimise the handling of volumes between Dagab’s warehouses in the southern parts of the country. For example, investments are being made in the existing high-bay warehouse in Backa in Gothenburg, which is now being expanded with two new automated aisles to significantly improve the storage capacity. In late 2022, Dagab’s new, modern and significantly larger warehouse for fruit, vegetables, and flowers was established in Landskrona, and in 2023, an automation solution was installed that was put into operations earlier this year.

– The development of the logistics of the future in recent years will result in efficiency improvements and increased capacity, and will be essential for us to provide a stronger customer offering and a competitive edge for our Group’s concepts, says Hans Bax.
