Smart energy use
We will reduce the climate impact from our energy use by generating our own green electricity, recovering heat and selling excess energy.
To reduce our climate impact we aim to exclusively use green electricity from the sun, wind and water. We also produce our own electricity with solar panels on the roofs of many of our stores and warehouses.
Axfood’s major solar investments
Axfood has, among other things, built a solar panel installation that is 80,000 square meters on the roof of Dagab’s logistics center in Bålsta. Additionally, we are building Sweden’s largest ground-based solar park outside Hallstavik on an area of approximately 710,000 square meters.
Dagab, Hemköp, and Willys are also installing solar panel systems on store roofs across the country.
Axfood utilizes surplus energy
Refrigerants with a significant climate impact should not be used in our refrigerators and freezers. Therefore, we are modernizing and replacing climate-impacting refrigerants with more energy-efficient alternatives.
By utilizing surplus heat, we aim to be self-sufficient in heating. Stores often have heat recovery systems, which means that energy for heating purposes does not need to be purchased.
For example, Axfood’s store chains have reduced energy consumption by installing refrigerated and freezer counters with lids and systems that use the heat generated by the store’s refrigeration and freezer units to heat the stores. Several stores and warehouses also sell surplus heat to the district heating network.
Recycling of waste
It is important to create circular systems to reduce our resource use. By sorting waste at offices, warehouses, and stores, Axfood works to reduce the amount of combustible waste and increase the amount that goes to recycling.
Waste from offices, warehouses, and stores, such as plastic, cardboard, and organic material, is collected and recycled into different fractions to be reused.
Axfood works with waste contractors to adjust the number of bins and collections according to the current needs of the stores and warehouses. This way, we reduce unnecessary transportation and increase the amount of organic material converted into biogas.
